Topic: Pleasantly Full: An Integrated Framework on Intuitive Working and Healthy Work Cessation

In recent years, scholars and practitioners have recognized the untenable nature of modern work cultures. Employees increasingly feel the need to rethink ways of working, and organizations are actively searching for effective responses. Dr. Kate Zipay offers a timely remedy to the perpetuation of overwork by introducing intuitive working—an approach to managing work demands and responsibilities based on one’s internally derived personal capacity and task needs rather than motivation stemming predominantly from external situational and emotional cues.

This research provides practical grounding for a growing science-practice rebellion against 24/7 work cultures, promoting a more sustainable work system that encourages both employees and organizations to ask: When have employees done enough work? Drawing on research in intuitive eating—an approach based on hunger and satiety (i.e., internal) cues rather than situational and emotional (i.e., external) ones—Kate and her research team propose that a similar way of thinking can be applied to work. This approach enables employees to focus on their internal cues to determine when they are “pleasantly full,” stopping before they exceed their limits and ultimately fostering more sustainable performance. Kate will explain how intuitive working promotes a balanced, appetitive approach to work that allows employees to engage with tasks in a way that maintains energy and well-being, thereby avoiding the depletion commonly associated with overwork. Finally, she will propose actionable strategies for employees and their organizational leaders to adopt intuitive working in order to meaningfully reshape their relationship with work.
